Genealogy has a way of tying all my other interests together, provides a way to meet and help others, and Its fun! it's a scavenger hunt , a giant puzzle, and something that gets people talking to each other!
  • A leaning toward a favorite flavor in food or type of music
  • Comfort or discomfort in a specific environment
  • Willingness to persevere in the face of hardship
  • How much of this did we get from our ancestors?

One way of understanding our world comes from learning about the people who came before us. We are the result of our collective history. The amount of information passed down through the generations by our genetic structure is still in research, but it is not to be denied. We already know that, on a cellular level, we are all descended from one woman, in Africa - the real Eve if you like.

See Family Research Links for links by surname and our Family History. For information on preserving family records for the next generation to enjoy, see Retouch. Additional information and links in Library.

The Map: The fascinating thing about Western European history is that every area is and has been affected by every other area.

I started adding color to the various ethnic areas and very few areas could be assigned a single color.

All the major ruling families are closely related, and the boundaries we are so familiar with have changed many times over the centuries.

Link tip: If you get a "file not found error" it may only mean that the page name has been changed. Try this trick; go to the URL address in your browser window and delete the characters after the last forward slash ( / ). Hit Enter and see if that will take you to the home page or menu for that site.

Caution: Most of these sites don't lend themselves to neat classifications so some ambiguity in classification will be apparent. Please notify me if you run across broken links or other site that should be added.

Software

The BEST Mac family tree software package, if not the best on ANY platform.
Why pick Reunion?

Not only does this software have an outstanding feature set, the user interface takes advantage of every inch of screen space. The display fields, fonts and even the background colors are customizable - wouldn't it be nice to color code those different family files?

Reunion is endlessly customizable and features include:

  • unlimited people or families per file; 50 children per family
  • individuals can be shown as male, female or unknown sex, notations for twins, adoptees, foster children, and early deaths. Sort by birthdate date button.
  • marriages status fields with flexible relationship status reporting, same-sex spouses, sort marriages by date
  • unlimited sources per family that can be shared by all families (categorized and customized) and now has the ability to merge duplicate sources.
  • date/age feasibility checking to instantly spot date typos and children born outside the range of the parents ages or marriage. It can automatically calculate and note relationships, ages and life expectancies.
  • contact & mailing list fields; bookmarking; customizable search features; multimedia linking of pictures, sound and video clips. Automatically add pictures to the web pages it exports.
  • It automatically creates customizable reports, charts, timelines, birthday calendars, questionnaires, mailing lists, forms, indexes, and other lists, exporting directly to your word processor.
  • creates GEDCOM files and two types of customizable of web exports, including privacy screening. Prints color and large format or banner.

Not bad for a program that runs on everything from an SE/30 to an Intel Mac And their tech support is OUTSTANDING! (for a Windows PC version, currently equivalent to the 4.0 version of Reunion, see the Sierra's Generations). Reunion 4 for Windows was acquired by Sierra in July 1997 and re-released as Generations for Windows in March 1998.

(No, I don't work for Leister Productions. I just think they are great!). But don't just take my word for it, check the Reunion User's WebRing below. My family tree sections were created in Reunion with minor editing in GoLive or Adobe PageMill.
